Captain James Cook
Captain James Cook was born in 1728 and was killed in Hawaii in 1779. He was a distinguished english navigator but started out as the son of a humble farm labourer. After sailing before the mast as an able seaman, James Cook signed up for the Navy in 1755. James Cook participated in the capture of Quebec and commanded an expedition to observe the transit of Venus. During this voyage he discovered and took possession for England of the Society Islands.
Then he made a voyage of discovery to the South Seas. His last voyage of discovery was to the Pacific, where he made many discoveries as far north as the Bering strait. He was killed in a dispute with natives in Hawaii in the Sandwich Islands.
