William Dampier
William Dampier started his life in 1653 and was gone in 1715. He was an English explorer and reformed buccaneer. In 1688 he gave piracy away and set out on a cruise to the South Seas. His exploration of the west and north of the coast of Australia showed that it was in fact an island.
His name was given to a number of localities in Australia, including the Dampier ARchipelago and the Dampier Strait between New Guinea and New Britain.
In 1697 his book New voyage Round the World got him a commission from the British Admiralty of HMS Roebuch to explore Australia and New Guinea. He explored Shark Bay in Western Australia , the Dampier Archipelago, and Roebuck Bay but he could not find any water so he had to head for Timor. After leaving Timor, he passed New Guinea, New Hanover, New Ireland, and New Britain. Do you see a pattern in all that naming.??
